The Andrews Family line - the English in me

 The Andrews Family

Here we will start in Audrieu, Normandy, France with William of Audrieu (Guillaume in French). When he came to England in 1066 with his son Robert, he was called William of Audrieu. William of Audrieu, who was born in 1024, had a son, Sir Robert of Audrieu, who was born in 1046. Sir Robert of Audrieu became a knight in William the Conqueror’s army and was with the invading party into England in 1066. He married Anne Winwick of Winwick, England. He settled in Winwick, Northamptonshire, England, and took on the last name Andrews.

The new Andrews family stayed in Winwick for the next six generations. Sir Thomas Ralph Andrews, the 4th great-grandson of Robert, married Magdalen Tokett. He was born around 1235. He moved to Carlisle, England, and died there around 1286. Sir Thomas’ son, Sir Ralph Andrews, married Mary Thompson. He was born around 1263 and moved to Yorkshire, England, where he died around 1306. The Andrews family lived in Yorkshire, England, for three generations.

Sir Ralph’s great-grandson, Sir William Andrews, son of Sir Ralph Andrews III, was born in Stoke, England, near Ipswich around 1350.

Sir William married Margaret Elizabeth Chislington. Sir William Andrews’ great-granddaughter, Lady Elizabeth Andrews, married Thomas Windsor of England. Sir William Andrews moved to Baylham, Suffolk, England, where he died around 1400.

The Andrews family lived in Baylham, Suffolk, England, for three generations. Sir Thomas Andrews Jr., the great-grandson of Sir William, was born in Norfolk, England, around 1447. He married Relicta Branch of Berkshire, England. They moved back to Northamptonshire, England, where they both died of old age. Lady Relicta died at age 81, and Sir Thomas died at age 68.

Sir Thomas Andrews Jr.’s son, Sir Richard Andrews Sr., was born in Baylham, Suffolk, England, around 1509. Sir Richard Sr. married Mary Heneage and moved to London, England, where he died at age 84 on June 25, 1593. Sir Richard’s son, Sir Richard Andrews Jr., was born in Norfolk, England, around 1536. Sir Richard’s brother, Thomas Richard Andrews, is the father of Bishop Lancelot Andrews; Lancelot participated in the crowning of King James and became Bishop of Winchester in 1619. Lancelot is one of the councilors who helped in the translation of the King James Bible in 1611. Sir Richard Jr. married Elizabeth Burte and remained in Norfolk, England, where he died around 1643. Sir Richard’s son, Robert Andrews, was born in Norfolk, England, on August 22, 1568. Robert Andrews married Grace Elizabeth Franklin and purchased the English ship called the Angel Gabriel. The ship Angel Gabriel was originally a warship with 20 cannons, and the ship weighed about 240 tons and was built for Sir Walter Raleigh. He was an explorer of South America. The ship was later turned into a merchant ship in the early 1600s. Robert Andrews became captain and owner of the ship Angel Gabriel soon after it had become a merchant ship. Robert Andrews was transporting passengers from England to New England. In 1635, the ship Angel Gabriel was caught in a hurricane off the coast of Maine, and on August 15, 1635, it sank. Many passengers survived the wreckage, though there were many that lost their lives. Robert and Grace settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts, where he died at age 75 on March 1, 1644. Robert’s grandson, Lt. John Andrews Jr., was born on October 30, 1620, in Norfolk, England. He lived in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and fought during the Revolutionary War.

The Andrews family lived in Ipswich, Massachusetts, for four generations until Jonathan Andrews was born on August 8, 1699. He married Sarah Smith and moved to Scarborough, Maine. He died on June 10, 1759.

Jonathan’s great-grandson, Stephen Andrews Jr., was born in Scarborough on October 29, 1779. He married Hannah Milliken and moved to Portland, Maine, where his son Stephen Andrews was born around 1803. Stephen Andrews Jr. died on May 1, 1805, in Portland.

Stephen Andrews III married Mary Stilson and had a son named James Andrews, who was born on October 4, 1833, in Portland. James Andrews married Elizabeth Hayes of New Hampshire and moved to Parsonsfield, Maine. James Andrews joined the Civil War and served nine months. His division formed a line across Virginia to prevent attacks on the capital and to prevent spies from entering the area.

Walter Andrews was born to James and Elizabeth in March of 1863. Walter Andrews married Jennie Patterson and moved to Stratham, New Hampshire, where their son James Andrews was born on June 5, 1896. Then they moved to Sanford, Maine, where he died in January of 1929.

James Andrews Sr. lived in Sanford, where he married Rena Johnson. Their son, James Andrews Jr., was born on January 12, 1923. James Sr. moved to Acton, Maine, and died on June 25, 1975.

James Andrews Jr. married Pauline Anspaugh and moved to Acton, Maine. He died in Acton at home on June 27, 1985. I was born to James Andrews and Pauline in 1966 in Sanford, Maine.
